Core Mathematics
"I’ve always been interested in using mathematics to make the world work better"
Alvin E. Roth
In Core Maths, the focus is very much on analysing news and using mathematics to make sense of the world. Building on the GCSE topics of percentages, limits of accuracy, averages and Pythagoras’ Theorem, we move to learning about new statistical techniques such as The Normal Distribution, Correlation and Regression and Populations and Sampling.
Students will learn about the importance and use of estimation, how to use spreadsheets to manipulate data sets, and, in financial mathematics, taxation, credit and wages. Throughout, students will be encouraged to analyse the numbers around in them in a critical way, as they use mathematics to make decisions and reach conclusions.
